The US Justice Department has entered the fray in a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, seeking to halt the state's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This court case, filed in federal court, targets the map supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme represents a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and undermines the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will withstand legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit claims that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," stated a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major response by the Democratic party in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required public consent, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to gain just a handful of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the controlling share will shape the final years of the sitting president's term, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and potential further challenges.
