The fast bowler Poised for a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about his chances of taking part.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and various factors at play, not only his injury, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the contest.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against India as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the first Test as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the starting games regardless. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
